LUDVIG DAAE was born in Vik, Sogn, where his father was pastor. He went to Copenhagen University to study for the church. Back in Bergen in 1752 he was ordained by the Bishop, Erik Pontoppidan, on 6 September, and then became personal chaplain to the vicar at Leikanger. In 1754 he took over as Vicar of Lindaas, paying the previous vicar 200 riksdalers (800 kroner) per annum until he died.
DRUDE CATHRINE MARIE HAAR was born at Finaas, later living at Viborg and then Voss. In her day children had to address their parents with the formal "you", and had to stand rather than sit at the meal table. By 1754 she was the only survivor of 8 children, living with her widowed mother in Bergen, and it was there that Ludvig and Drude were married.
In 1759 Ludvig was chosen as Vicar of Wikors in Hardanger. However a large number of his local congregation in Lindaas petitioned the king that he should be allowed to stay, and he remained at Lindaas for the rest of his life.
When each of her children was a month old, Drude would take him or her to a woman in the area to breast-feed for a year or so, with a cow as payment. Usually when she went to pick up the child she would bring another baby and another cow!
When one of her sons, Iver Munthe, was ill he overheard his mother saying to a neighbour "Iver won't survive this time". He called out to his mother "Don't say that, mother; I shall live yet". His mother turned and gave him a smack on the ear, saying "How dare you contradict your mother!" Iver of course did live to record the story.
Ludvig was a small man whilst Drude was big and strong. When he was unwell she would carry him from room to room.
Ludvig and Drude both died and were buried at Lindaas.
ANDERS was a brilliant student and became vicar of Leik-anger. He married (7 Oct 1785) Anne Sophie Heiberg (b 10 Apr 1757) and they had 5 children. After she died (31 May 1807) he married (25 Nov 1807) Ollegaard Sophie Lem (b 23 Nov 1779) but she died 30 Oct 1809 leaving a one-year-old son. Finally he married (13 Jul 1810) Adelus Mathea Ravn (b 20 Jan 1763) who outlived him, dying 13 Mar 1833.
JOHAN CHRISTOPHER HAAR was a sickly child and his mother's favourite. He was a land surveyor in Jutland for 3 years, and then in 1785 became chaplain to his father at Lindaas for 11 years. Eventually he became vicar of Veo. Bishop Pavels liked him the most of all the Daaes. He married (14 Apr 1790) Susanne Grytten and they had 8 children. Susanne died 16 Nov 1828. A granddaughter of theirs (Susannah Daae Thoresen) married Henrik Ibsen the playwright.
OVE CHRISTIAN LEYRDAHL was educated at Copenhagen like his brothers, and then became vicar of Vardo in North Norway right on the Russian border. A Russian raiding party stole or destroyed all his possessions so he moved back to Bergen and later became vicar of Hafslo. Bishop Pavels recorded that he was a handsome man but not well fitted for the ministry. He married (18 Sep 1796) Olave Marie Tuchsen (see 135) and had 2 daughters. Olave died 27 Jul 1822, and the following year Ove married Anne Elizabeth Jerson (b 22 Mar 1766) who outlived him, dying 20 Mar 1843.
IVER MUNTHE was educated in Copenhagen. He became vicar of Fondevig where he married (11 Feb 1795) Pernille Marie Kobro (b 24 Jun 1772). They had one son but Pernille died (2 Dec 1795) in childbirth. In 1803 he became vicar of Fane and there he married (13 Nov 1805) Edvardine Fritzner (b 1781) and had 9 more children. His eldest son later married his stepmother's younger sister Helene. Edvardine died 1 Oct 1864.
LUDVIG became vicar of Gloppen in 1829. He married (1802) Catherine Dorothea Lilliedahl (b 26 Aug 1771) and had one son (who in turn was father of Professor (of History) Ludvig Ludvigssen Daae). Catherine died 4 Dec 1809 and the following year he married Nille Susanna Holch (b 2 Sep 1772) and had 2 more children. Nille died 6 Nov 1861.
CHRISTEN appears to have lived at Lindaas most of his life. He married (25 Nov 1802) Elisabeth Marie Friis (b 4 Nov 1785) and they had 8 children, the second, Ludvig, becoming Professor of History at Kristiania University. Christen was vicar of Lindaas from 1837 to 1847, the same post his father had held many years before. Elisabeth died 22 Nov 1865.
